The tribute video highlighted Fox’s work over the years and included excerpts from his past interviews.

“He came into our living rooms on the small screen each week as Alex P. Keaton (from Family Ties) and eventually onto the big screen as (Back to the Future’s) Marty McFly,” the narrator said. “But Michael J. Fox had a compelling third act as a Parkinson’s sufferer and stem cell research advocate.”

The video montage revealed that Fox, 64, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 and went public with his battle in 1998. He exited the TV comedy Spin City in 2000 when his symptoms “began to affect his work.”

“His most lasting role may have been as a tireless voice against Parkinson’s, a performance the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences honoured with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022,” the clip continued, according to EW. “In the end, Fox came to understand that his battle against the disease brought out the best in him.”

A CNN spokesperson said in a statement to EW, “The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family.”

Fox reassures fans he’s OK

“How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?” Fox said, responding to the news on his Threads account.

“Do you…A) Switch to MSNBC, or whatever they are calling themselves these days, (B) Pour scalding hot water on your lap, if it hurts you’re fine, (C) Call your wife, hopefully she’s concerned but reassuring, (D) Relax, they do this once every year, (E) Ask yourself wtf? I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m OK. Love, Mike,” Fox concluded.

This week, after Fox appeared at PaleyFest in Los Angeles to celebrate the Season 3 finale of Apple TV’s Shrinking (in which he guest stars), a rep for the Emmy winner told TMZ he “is doing great.”

“He was at PaleyFest yesterday. He was on stage and was giving interviews,” they said.

Fans were quick to express their thankfulness that CNN’s report was just a mistake.

WHEW,” singer-songwriter Jason Isbell commented, while fellow actor Clark Gregg jokingly wrote, “I’m going to need those flowers back.”

Mike I’m so glad you’re okay but I’m concerned by how quickly option B popped into your head. Maybe just a little safety pin prick as an ‘I’m alive’ test?” another added.

When one fan suggested that the Teen Wolf star “go outside and ask the first person you come across: ‘Can you see me?’” Fox replied, “Brilliant.”

“I felt a little panic when I saw the CNN headline,” someone else wrote. “Google it. Partner walked in, asked what I was doing. ‘Michael J. Fox isn’t dead!’ he said, sounding offended by my stupidity, like, ‘How dare I?’ Then I learned it wasn’t just me. Most people legit feel strongly about your continued existence.”

“Wait, how can you be dead? Shrinking just got picked up for a 4th season,” another person was quick to add. “I saw (co-creator and star) Jason (Segel) on Kimmel two nights ago and he said the whole cast is coming back. So don’t worry, you’re not dead.”
